It’s a little more than a month away from the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes, but the racing is just one part of the industry.

The Full Moon Farm in Finksburg will host its Spring Festival fundraiser this weekend to showcase “eventing” and help support future riders. Eventing is an equestrian sport in which competitors take part in several contests, usually cross-country, dressage and show jumping.

“Anybody, everybody is welcome. If it’s your first time on a farm, and you’ve never been around horses, to people who are seasoned equestrian, this is a place to be with your friends and family. There will be a pet costume contest, food vendors, riders of all levels and an exhibition,” said Jeremy Scott, a board member for the Full Moon Farm Eventing Foundation.

There will be free pony rides and a kissing booth with some of the friendlier horses.

The Carroll County farm offers riding lessons for beginners, to eventing disciplines, like dressage and jumping.

But being an equestrian isn’t cheap, and that’s why the Full Moon Farm Eventing Foundation hosts its fundraiser to establish a grant to help more people get involved in the industry.

“It’s an expensive sport, and we’re well aware of that, but our goal is to try to make it as accessible to as many people as possible,” said Christine Hryzak, the foundation’s vice chair. “Everyone thinks that riding is the only way to get involved with horses, but there are so many opportunities, like volunteering at events. You don’t have to have any horse experience to be a jump judge and watch people ride by and radio in if they jumped the jump or not.”

The Spring Festival is free to attend with all the money raised coming from donations and event entry fees. The festival runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, and for more information, visit the following website.
