Maryland Horse Industry Board Updates

Trailering Info

There has been lots of confusion among folks who trailer horses about when you need a DOT number for your rig, whether you need to go through weigh stations, whether you need a Commercial Driver's License, etc. For those of you who missed our great meeting last Friday night, where representatives of the State Highway Administration, the Motor Vehicle Administration and the State Police answered questions about rules governing trailers and trailering, click here for a great publication from the University of Maryland Extension that lays it all out very clearly.

Expand Your Equestrian Business – Join The Maryland Equine Experience Centers Network

Posted: 24 Jan 2014 07:18 AM PST

All licensed horse stables in Maryland are invited to participate in the Maryland Horse Industry Board (MHIB)’s new “Equine Experience Center” program. Participating Equine Experience Centers  will be facilities that offer equine introductory programs for people with little to no experience with horses.

Explains MHIB Executive Director Ross Peddicord. “It is our intent to create Equine Experience Centers which are facilities or organizations that are certified to educate the public about the different aspects of the horse industry in Maryland and have a passion to share this interest in a safe, friendly and fun environment.”

In addition to promoting the horse industry by enticing more people to interact and spend time with horses, the Experience Centers will also provide more opportunities for stables to increase their revenue and profile. The program is entirely free and voluntary for organizations that become a part of it, but they will be required to meet certain standards.

Information sessions are open to all Maryland licensed stables. There is no charge to attend but registration is required. Lunch will be included. All sessions are from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Tuesday, Jan. 28: Baltimore County Ag Center, Cockeysville

Tuesday, Feb. 4: Talbot Community Center, Easton

Wednesday, Feb. 5: Jaycees Community Center, Waldorf

Another opportunity for grants!

If you missed the current round of grants distributed by the Maryland Horse Industry Board, perhaps you ought to check out the grant opportunities offered by the Maryland Horse Industry Foundation, which is accepting applications until January 30 for their 2014 grants.

The Maryland Horse Industry Foundation (MHIF) was chartered in 1988 by the Maryland Horse Breeders Association (MHBA) to serve various educational and charitable needs of the Maryland horse industry.

Foundation projects include:

  • maintenance and expansion of the MHBA reference and research library,
  • assistance to programs that support the aftercare and retraining of Thoroughbreds after they have retired from racing,
  • support for scientific and veterinary research, and
  • special grants for a variety of related causes to the Maryland horse industry.

(Click here to find out who received 2014 grants from the Maryland Horse Industry BOARD, not to be confused with the FOUNDATION. The MD Horse Industry Board is a commodity board housed at the Maryland Department of Agriculture and is funded by all Maryland horsemen; for every bag of feed we buy, 15¢ goes to the feed fund for the MD Horse Industry BOARD.)
